Wildlife

Experience signature Arctic wildlife along your route — from puffins and guillemots nesting on steep northern cliffs to the walruses resting along remote shores and the Arctic foxes roaming tundra slopes. In Svalbard’s glacier-lined fjords, encounter the region’s most iconic predator: the polar bear, moving across sea ice and coastal ridges in search of prey.

Atlantic puffin

Atlantic puffin

These small seabirds are strong swimmers and dive to depths of 60m in search of fish. They return to land during breeding season (April to September) to nest in burrows on coastal cliffs.

Walrus

Walrus

Adult walruses are characterized by prominent tusks and whiskers. Adult males in the Pacific can weigh more than 1,200 kilograms.

Polar bear

Polar bear

This is the largest land carnivore on the planet. Incredibly well adapted to its marine environment, the polar bear may swim underwater for up to three minutes to approach seals on shore or on ice floes

Little Auk

Little Auk

These little birds have a similar build to a starling, growing to about 18 cm. Although pint-sized, they have a big appetite, eating up to 60,000 copepods a day

Reindeer

Reindeer

Also known as the Caribou in North America this species of deer has a circumpolar distribution. Male reindeer develop antlers from April through July, shedding the velvet covering in late summer

Ringed Seal

Ringed Seal

The smallest seal in the Arctic, they spend most of their time near the shore feeding on cod and crustaceans. These charismatic seals get their name from the light-colored circular patterns on their coat

Black Guillemot

Black Guillemot

Amidst the enchanting coastlines of Norway and the wild landscapes of Svalbard, the black guillemot graces the skies with its stunning black plumage and contrasting white wing patches. These resilient birds are well adapted to the harsh Arctic climate and favor rugged cliffs and rocky shorelines

Born in Chukotka, on the very edge of the Eurasian continent, Dmitry grew up surrounded by the raw wilderness of the Pacific. This unique upbringing sparked his passion for marine mammals, his first research expedition to Kamchatka and his subsequent career studying marine biology and world biodiversity conservation. Dmitry has since participated in the creation of the Ecological Atlases of the Seas of Russia and has studied, in-depth, the marine mammals of the polar regions.
